Since 1919 we have hunted this vast wilderness area known as Tweedsmuir Park.  My Grandfather established Van Tine Guiding and my father operated it for almost 50 years.  I began guiding in the mid 1980's and took over in 1993.   Our average success rate is about 75% for Moose and 100% for spring Bear.  We have never been below 50% in one season.

Our primary species are Moose and Bear but all species listed above are available in one combination hunt.

92% Success for moose in 2005

October 2005,  Chief Louis Lake

The Hunts:

Ootsa Lake Hunt:

Located on the South shore of Ootsa Lake, the road camp consists of two cabins and outdoor toilets. The kitchen and a log guest cabin, which sleeps 6 comfortably, have wood heat,  power (generator) and running cold water.  From here we either hunt the logging roads by pickup trucks and ATV's, or hunt a huge variety of lakes, meadows and swamps by boat, by foot, and in tree stands.  With such a vast area to hunt and so many ways to hunt it, this has proven to be our most successful hunt for both moose and bear.
  • Maximum 6 hunters at one time
  • High success rates
  • Excellent bear hunting
  • Suitable for all ages & levels of physical fitness
  • Good for Bow hunters

Chief Louis Lake Hunt:

Chief Louis Lake is located in the Chelaslie River drainage.  A network of lakes, meadows and streams provide some of British Columbia's best moose habitat.  The camp is located about 8 km (5 miles) from the nearest road where we leave our vehicles and Quad in.  There are 2 bunk cabins with wood heat, a kitchen and outdoor toilets.  We hunt from the boats and on foot to the many tree stands located around the lake.  This is an excellent hunt for moose during the rut.  It is not uncommon to call them in within 50 yards.

From Chief Louis it is a 4 mile quad ride to Uduk Lake where we have an overnight cabin and boat.  This small lake produces great results every year.

  • Maximum 6 hunters

  • Some walking required
  • Should be willing to sit in tree stands
  • Should be willing to ride ATV's

Fly – In Mountain Hunt:

This is truly a wilderness experience.  From Burns Lake you fly about 1 hour in a float plane (Beaver) into the heart of British Columbia's largest protected wilderness area.  The camp is located at about 4500 ft and consists of two wall tents with wood heat.   We hunt from the boat and by foot through a vast network of mountain meadows.  This is an early season hunt and the bulls are in full rut!  Here you will experience moose hunting at its finest.

  • Maximum 4 hunters

  • Some walking required
  • Should be willing to sit in tree stands
  • Must be willing to live in tents
  • Weight restrictions may apply

Spring Bear Hunts:

Based out of the Road camp on Ootsa Lake, these hunts last for 7 days.  Spot & Stalk is generally the method we use.  We hunt the road sides and some south aspect slopes where the grass is greening up first.  The average bear will square about 6 feet and about 40% are cinnamon or chocolate colored.  With the wide range of wildlife and abundance of bear in the area, this is a very exciting hunt.

  • Maximum 8 hunters

  • Some walking required
  • Excellent for bow hunters
  • 90 - 100% success every year
  • May 10th - June 1st
